Podium for Bernstorff at the first race of the season in Barcelona
Emil Bernstorff secures a podium finish in the Saturday feature race on his return for his 2nd year in GP3. The young driver who last year finished 5th in the overall GP3 standings started the weekend by qualifying 3rd on the grid and followed up this fine performance by driving a good race conserving his tyres enabling him to attack the leaders at the end only missing out on P2 by one tenth of a second.
Saturdays reverse grid race caused more drama as Emil fought his way up from sixth on the grid to P4 though the first couple of corners. The battle for the podium heated up towards the end of the race and Emil was attacking hard only to be forced wide and losing a position as a result.
“I’m happy with the weekend overall even though I was so close to P2 in race 1 and another podium in race 2” said Emil reflecting on the first weekend of the championship. “We worked hard over the winter to be prepared this year and we tried a lot of things with the car in the pre-season tests. We knew we had the speed to compete at the front throughout the pre-season, but it was nice to confirm it when it mattered. Now we can look forward to the Red Bull Ring weekend June 18-20th.”
