Emil Bernstorff takes GP3 feature race win at Spa
The British driver Emil Bernstorff played the new virtual safety car rules to perfection to claim his first GP3 feature race win at the picturesque Ardennes Circuit.
Starting from P3 on the grid Bernstorff immediately picked up a place at the start and set off to chase the win, with the two leading drivers distancing themselves from the chasing pack in the process.
An incident on lap 3 meant that the first of three virtual safety car periods were started. As a significant part of the race was run under the virtual safety car Bernstorff’s strength of managing his tyres never came into play. However, Ocon restarted too early at the end of the second virtual safety car period and the infringement cost him dearly as he was given a post race 5s penalty handing the win to Bernstorff who finished just 1 second behind him on the track.
Bernstorff had the following to say on Sunday morning when he heard the news that he had been promoted to the race win:
“Great news to wake up to! It was a strange race with many different challenges but the team has really deserved a win and I’m glad we finally got it even though it wasn’t on track.”
Next race at Monza on Sept 5-6
